Early Childhood Licensure Program

Program Requirements:

  • Admission to the NMSU Graduate School – Online Application
  • Acceptance and enrollment in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration & Leadership MA program
  • Complete Core Courses (courses with * are prerequisites to TEP Methods Courses; TEP portfolio can be submitted during the semester in which you are finishing the Core Courses).
    • *EDUC 515: Multicultural Education
    • *EDUC 519: Research in Curriculum & Pedagogy
    • BIL 505: Bilingual Preschool Child
    • ECED 510: Issues in Early Childhood Education
  • Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP)
    • Obtain application information at https://tpal.nmsu.edu/admission/tep-admission/
    • Make appointment with Program Director for a degree check prior to submitting TEP portfolio.
    • Pass Praxis Core Academic Skills Exams: Reading, Writing, and Math. Information can be found at https://www.ets.org/praxis/about/core/
    • Submit TEP portfolio to College (dates to be announced – Fall – 3rd Friday of September; Spring -3rd  Friday of February; contact Program Director for Summer date) 
  • Once admitted to TEP, complete Teaching Methods Block Courses listed below;
  • Fall Block – 6 credits
    • RDG 550: Teaching & Learning – Reading & Writing
    • ECED 540: Teaching & Learning – Math & Science 
  • Spring Block – 6 credits 
    • SPED 550: Working w/ Young Children w/ Special Needs, Ages 3-8
    • RDG 551: Literacy Development in Early Childhood 
  • Summer Block – 6 credits
    • ECED 520: Child Development, Assessment, & Well-being of Young Children 
    • ECED 570: Play in the Early Childhood Curriculum 
  • Student Teaching Entry Portfolio (STEP) one semester prior to student teaching 
    • Obtain application information at https://tpal.nmsu.edu/admission/tep-admission/stia/
    • Make an appointment with Program Director for a degree check prior to submitting STEP 
    • Submit Student Teaching Packet (STEP) Fall – 1st Friday in October; Spring – 1st Friday in March 
  • Student Teaching – must be completed during final semester.

Once you have completed the courses listed above and licensure exams, you are eligible to apply for an early childhood teaching license through the New Mexico Public Education Department https://webnew.ped.state.nm.us/bureaus/licensure/how-to-apply/
