Biography

Bárbara Martínez-Griego was Faculty and Department Head of the BAS in Child, Youth, and Family Studies at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, WA prior to begin hired by NMSU. Ms. Martinez-Griego designed and implemented an interdisciplinary degree program which focused on early childhood education and human services. Ms. Martínez-Griego spent 18 years at Skagit Valley College, where she chaired the Early Childhood Education and Family Life program for 9 years. Under the leadership of Ms. Martínez-Griego, the Early Childhood Education program at Skagit Valley College, in Mount Vernon, WA. has received local, regional, and national recognition for initiating a bilingual educational approach and promoting the success of Latino students and their families. The department also garnered significant grant funding to promote continuing education for Head Start instructors and to create educational pathways for bilingual paraeducators. A focus of her work has been Latina home-based childcare providers and childcare providers in First Nations communities.

Ms. Martinez-Griego has extensive experience as a college faculty, elementary school teacher, preschool teacher, Early Childhood Education program administrator, and child care licensor. Barbara is pursuing her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico State University. Ms. Martinez-Griego received her Bachelor of Science degree from New Mexico State University in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education and earned her Master of Education Studies at Goddard College in Vermont, focused on dual language teaching, learning and mentoring, coaching and accountability. Ms. Martinez-Griego is passionate about insuring that children of color maintain their native language and cultural identity.
