Magdalena Pando is an Assistant Professor of Curriculum & Instruction at the School of Teacher Preparation, Leadership and Administration at New Mexico State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis in Bilingual Education from Texas Tech University. She specializes in second language teaching methods in math and science for teachers of English language learners in grades K-12. Research interests include inquiry based methods in math and science, STEM education for English language learners, second language pedagogies, functional linguistics in math and science and Bilingual/ESL teacher beliefs and practice.
Exploring Teacher Professional Knowledge to Teach Science to English Language Learners is a project funded by the New Mexico State University College of Education Emerging Scholars Initiative in the amount of $8,000. Through this project Dr. Pando investigates the linguistic, pedagogical and content challenges science teachers encounter when the language of instruction is restricted to English.
Spanish Immersion is an institute that Dr. Pando coordinates and offers every summer at NMSU. This project is funded by the New Mexico Public Education Department in the amount of $2000 every summer. Through this institute in-service and pre-service teachers are immersed in an intensive Spanish language learning experience in order to prepare for New Mexico’s Spanish Language Proficiency Exam La Prueba to obtain a bilingual endorsement. The funds are used to cover study resources and examination fees for participants in the institute.
