Monique Matute-Chavarria received her Ph.D. in the Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Prior to obtaining her Ph.D. in Special Education, she worked with Nevada Early Intervention Services working with children birth to three with disabilities. While at UNLV, she served as a Rodman Graduate Teaching Assistant and Holmes Scholar for the College of Education. She was also selected as a fellow for the Hammill Institute on Disabilities and served as editorial assistant for Intervention in School and Clinic, the practitioner journal associated with Hammill.

Following graduation, she transitioned to an editorial board member of Intervention in School and Clinic. Additionally, while at UNLV, she received a UNLV Summer Research Fellowship Award and most recently won the 2020 American Association of Colleges Teacher Education (AACTE) Dissertation Funding Competition at the annual conference. Monique’s research focuses on the intersections of race, family, and disability. Her publications and presentations thus far have been centered on culturally responsive practices in special education, equity, and access for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in special education, the disproportionate representation of Black males in special education, and family engagement of CLD families.
