Dr. Hernandez, an accomplished teacher and researcher in the field of literacy,  has been selected as the Don and Sarrah Kidd Endowed Chair in Literacy.  Hernandez joins the NMSU faculty from California Polytechnic State University.  She is especially interested in reaching out to Latino students who have learned English as their second language to extend her knowledge of how Latin students achieve academic success and what literacy and educational challenges they face in that quest.

Educational Background
Dr. Hernandez holds a doctorate in literacy education from Stanford University and has co-authored two books on literacy.  She recently served as principal investigator for a $1.5 million federal grant to provide professional development for teachers of English language learners.
