STEM Outreach Center

A Message from the Director

Dr. Wanda Bulger-Tamez

Wanda

Our mission at the STEM Outreach Center is to build a NMSU K-16 pipeline Outreach Program by reaching out to school districts, educators, families, community agencies, and higher education institutions.

The STEM Outreach Center Framework supports STEM education within the College of Health, Education Social Transformation (HEST) and partner districts. The Out-of-School Time programs offer accessibility for under-represented students in rural and isolated areas to explore STEM from an early age; Professional Learning programs such as MC2 and EMSS build capacity in math and science education focused on research-based practices; the NMC3 project builds a network and support for teachers, families, and caregivers by providing technology, pedagogy, and community resources. Partnerships are also important in amplifying the impact that our Center has in providing knowledge and expertise in a way that is inclusive of all stakeholders.

Outreach and research is woven within all of our programs to provide high quality work and inform effectiveness and accessibility for all students in New Mexico.

Early Childhood Research and Outreach

Myrna’s Childrens Village

Myrna’s Children’s Village offers early care and education programs for NMSU students, faculty, staff, and community families and children, six weeks to five years of age. Through a variety of program options for infants, toddlers, and preschool children, families have choices to meet the childcare and educational needs of their young children.feature_pre-k_3.jpg

All of the NMSU Children’s Village programs provide high quality care and education for young children as well as environments for university students to learn about appropriate education for young children. University students are supervised at all times by permanent staff members. In addition to serving as field experience sites, the NMSU Children’s Village Programs serve as sites for faculty research.

Project ELevate

Professional Development for Teachers of Bilingual/English Learners Project ELevate

Dr. Anita Hernández has received a five year $2.78 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education that will support the professional development of educators working with bilingual learners.

Dr. Anita Hernández, professor and the Don and Sarrah Kidd Endowed Chair in Literacy, developed Project ELevate in partnership with local districts, community DACC partner ENLACE, and NMSU’s Chicano Programs. One of the priorities of the grant will be to create community engagement opportunities. ENLACE personnel, Dr. Marquez and Delma Tofoya will organize Tech Goes Home family engagement projects and Chicano Program Director, Dr. Gutiérrez-Spencer will organize a Mother-Daughter college pathway program. Over five years, the grant will support the professional development of 50 future teachers to earn endorsements and licensures, 115 classroom teachers to earn either an endorsement, MA degree; or national board certification, and one thousand parents who will be able to participate in one of the community engagement projects.
