Dr. Susana Ibarra Johnson is an Associate Professor of Bilingual Education/TESOL and Program
Coordinator at New Mexico State University. A nationally recognized scholar, speaker, and
advocate for bilingual education, her work focuses on translanguaging, dynamic biliteracy,
culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies, and teacher preparation in dual-language
bilingual education contexts. She is co-author of The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging
Students’ Bilingualism for Learning (2nd ed., 2025) and founder of The Translanguaging
Classroom Summer Institute.
Dr. Ibarra Johnson is the recipient of the 2025 Association of Bilingual Education New Mexico
(ABENM) University Bilingual Education Professor of the Year Award and the 2025 American
Association of Hispanics in Higher Education Best Scholarly Paper Award. She currently leads
the W.K. Kellogg Foundation-funded project, Dynamic Biliteracy: Leveraging Biliteracy and
Structured Literacy, which supports bilingual educators across New Mexico through innovative
professional learning and community-based biliteracy practices. She also serves in national
leadership roles with NABE and AERA and is committed to advancing equity, biliteracy, and
social justice for bilingual students and communities
