Access, equity and social justice
The Bilingual Education/TESOL program prepares scholars, practitioners, and leaders in understanding multi/bilingualism in the context of schools, families, communities and society. The Southwest borderlands situate participants in a unique position in which to critically examine issues confronting Spanish-speaking and heritage language populations.
Purpose
The purpose of this guide is to clarify endorsement requirements for TESOL and bilingual educators. Requirements are different based on the licensure level of educators and whether the educator is working at the elementary or secondary level. The guide will review endorsement requirements from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) with the goal of increasing the number of bilingual and/or TESOL endorsed educators in New Mexico. Secondary educators, in particular, are required to earn more than one endorsement to teach either bilingual or TESOL courses.
