The Southwest borderlands situate participants in a unique position in which to critically examine issues confronting Spanish speaking and heritage language populations. A key dimension of the program includes the advancement of issues related to equity and social justice by encouraging participants to serve as advocates for bilingual children, their families and communities.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The TESOL program at New Mexico State University offers both undergraduate and graduate education designed to prepare preservice and inservice teachers to work with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in the context of classrooms, schools and community. CLD is a term that is often used to describe these students. Other common terms used to describe this particular population of students are: English Language Learners (ELL’s), English as a Second Language (ESL) students, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and bilingual learners. The following statement serves to guide both program development and individual coursework taught by program faculty.
