Things You Should Know

• • • We offer two kinds of doctorates in C&I: Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in a face-to-face modality and the Doctorate of Philosophy in an online format. Both of these degrees:
      • Are rigorous degrees requiring intellectual and personal commitment beyond compare
      • Ask for a lifelong commitment to teaching and learning, to research and to service
      • Have similar academic courses of study, and
      • Require a dissertation based on original research, inextricably grounded within an array of primary and secondary sources
    • You cannot take doctoral classes unless or until you are admitted into the Doctoral Program
    • Our Doctoral Program Areas are:
      • Bilingual Education;
      • Critical Pedagogies/Multicultural Education;
      • Early Childhood Education (on-line only);
      • Learning Design & Technology;
      • Literacy, Language & Culture; and,
      • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
      • Special Education
    • Prerequisites for Our Doctoral Program
      • Three years of teaching experience at the PreK-12 level or post-secondary level (or equivalent)
      • An earned MA degree in education (or equivalent)

To Apply

• • • Apply to the NMSU Graduate School
    • Apply to C&I by submitting your Application Portfolio via the NMSU Graduate School Online Portal by TBD.
    • • See the sections, “Applying to the Doctoral Program,” “Doctoral Intake Application Instructions” and the “C&I Doctoral Student Checklist” in the Doctoral Handbooks” Face-to-Face Program Handbook or Online Program Handbook.

NOTE:  Potential students who have written successful portfolios will be invited to interview with the Doctoral Qualifying Committee (a committee of C&I faculty)

Once You Are Accepted

• • • Attend the applicable Doctoral Orientation Meeting your first semester of classes
    • Meet with your Interim Adviser during your first semester of classes
    • Get to know our faculty
    • Read the Doctoral Handbook and the sections of the NMSU Graduate Catalog that apply to you (this is your responsibility)
    • Follow the Doctoral Program Checklist from the C&I Doctoral Handbooks:
      • Face-to-Face Handbook 
      • Online Handbook
